first_imgKolkata: The passenger count as well as the earning of Metro Railways have witnessed a significant rise in the first five months of the 2018-19 financial year.A spokesperson for Metro Railways has informed on Monday that the trains have carried 8.77 crore passengers from April to August this year against 8.54 crore in the corresponding period of the previous year, registering a rise of 2.71 percent.”Our earnings have also gone up to Rs 83.64 crore in the five months (April to August) from 8.54 crore in the corresponding period of the previous year. The increase in terms of percentage is 3.85,” the spokesperson added. Also Read – Rain batters Kolkata, cripples normal lifeAccording to senior officials at the Metro railways, the increase on both the fronts is the result of continuous efforts on their part to enhance passenger amenities and security in the underground railways.The metro network currently consists of one operational line of 27.22 km from Noapara in the north to Kavi Subhash (Garia) in the south with more than 300 services daily.On an average, more than 6.5 lakh commuters avail the metro services in the city and the number of stations in the network is 24.A number of metro projects are on the pipelines and it is expected that by the end of 2021, a large part of the city and its suburbs will come under the network of the Metro services.Work is going on in full swing for Metro projects like Garia-Airport, Joka-BBD Bag and East-West Metro that will be connecting Salt Lake Sector V with Howrah Maidan.last_img
