first_imgGary Ballance celebrates after scoring his 3rd Test ton for EnglandWelcome to the coverage of Day 1 of the 3rd Test between India and England from the Rose Bowl stadium in Southampton.A great day of cricket for England. Alastair Cook’s decision to bat was right on the money with a total of 247 runs scored at the loss of just two wickets on the first day. Sam Robson and Cook started off brilliantly amid a drop chance of the England skipper at the hands of Ravindra Jadeja. But, Mohammed Shami provided the much-needed breakthrough to India and Jadeja got an opportunity to make mends for his drop catch. Robson’s dismissal opened up the chances for India but the incoming batsman Gary Ballance took the game away from the opposition. Cook and Ballance added a grueling 158 runs for the second wicket to stabilize the innings for England. In a befitting reply to his critics, the England skipper played a  responsible innings of 95 runs but failed to notch up his 26th Test ton. Jadeja finally sent Cook back home but the damage was already done. Ian Bell arrived at the crease to witness Ballance’s 3rd Test ton in six Tests as India failed to trouble the batsmen. MS Dhoni also decided to take the second new ball but none of the seamers were able to sneak in another wicket. England will be confident after piling up crucial runs on the first day while India will try to bounce back with some quick wickets in the morning session on Day 2. advertisementWith Ian Bell(16) and Gary Ballance(104) at the crease, England end Day 1 at 247/2 after 90 overs of play. That’ll be STUMPS on Day 1!! POOR LINE from Singh!! Alastair Cook and Gary Ballance are out in the middle for England while Pankaj Singh will start the proceedings for India. And, we’re back!! LUNCH: The first session swung both ways as far as the momentum in the game is concerned. Apart from Ravindra Jadeja’s drop catch, Dhoni will be happy with his bowlers who have managed to keep a tight lid on the runs and also sneaked in a wicket. On the other hand, despite losing a wicket in the session, England will be happy to see their skipper Alastair Cook back in form who’s two runs shy of a crucial fifty following a heavy criticism on his captaincy and more importantly his batting prowess. Dhoni and his men will be wary of the Cook’s start and a plan to send him back to the hut should definitely be on cards. Also, Gary Ballance is fairly new at the crease and India would like to take advantage of the situation when the second session gets underway. With Alastair Cook(48) and Gary Ballance(4) at the crease, England are currently at 78/1 after 29 overs.India is playing without Ishant Sharma, this is the first time in the history when Indian supporters are sad about it. #IndvsEng Jimeet Shah (@jimeetshh) July 27, 2014FOUR RUNS off the over!!28.5 overs: FOUR!!
